'Witch Finder General' with 'A Field in England'

Part of a series of double bills in which classics of British Cinema from 1968 are paired with a film from another era that shares its radical spirit.

Witchfinder General

(1968, UK, cert. 15)

Dir: Michael Reeves. With Vincent Price, Ian Ogilvy, Rupert Davies

A disturbing tale set during the English Civil War. Vincent Price stars as corrupt real-life inquisitor who travels across an idyllic East Anglian landscape, extracting confessions of witchcraft in a brutal reign of terror.

Duration 86 minutes

A Field in England

(2013, UK, cert. 15)

Dir: Ben Wheatley. With Julian Barratt, Michael Smiley, Reece Shearsmith

This nightmarish black comedy, again set during the English Civil War, follows a group of deserters drugged and tricked by an alchemist into looking for nearby buried treasure. What follows is eerily beautiful and deeply unsettling.
