Bach Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1

Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier comprises two ‘books’ of 24 preludes and fugues in all 12 major and minor keys. What began as an exercise ‘for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning’ ultimately shaped the course of Western music history, resonating across the centuries through the works of Haydn and Mozart to the peak of Romanticism and beyond. Here leading British harpsichordist Richard Egarr performs the sprightly fugues and preludes of Book 1 (1722), each miniature masterpiece a sublime act of harmonic and melodic invention.

Whether conducting, playing concerti, giving solo recitals or performing chamber music, Richard Egarr brings a joyful sense of adventure and a keen, enquiring mind to all his music-making. He is Music Director of the Ancient Academy of Music and regularly guest conducts with other leading period ensembles.
