Waterlitz

Sun 1 Jan 2012

With nerves of steel it keeps watch: silent and sentinel. Its 20-metre high body is made of eight huge shipping containers. But what lies behind their bolted doors, and what happens once the totem stirs?

Last year Générik Vapeur held Brighton’s city streets siege with a wandering tribe of blue men (Bivouac) and a giant washing line of multi-coloured cars (Drôles d’Oiseaux). Now, the world-renowned French company is back with its brand-new creation, a signature mix of breathtaking aerial ballet, anarchic street theatre and explosive pyrotechnics.

Waterlitz is an astounding spectacle combined with bold and impassioned enquiry into the pressing concerns of our age. It explores the ghosts of globalisation and the environmental impact of our ever more mechanised world. Yet, in the final reckoning, it suggests that the human mind and our indomitable spirit can never be contained.

Waterlitz has been created for the European Zone of Artistic Projects (ZEPA) a European network promoting the development of streetarts supported by the INTERREG IVA (CHANNEL) ENGLAND cross-border programme.
