To The Public Danger

1 Jan 2012

A fickle floozy discards her dreary boyfriend for a roguish bounder before heading off for a drunken high-speed car-ride down country lanes. This B-movie – scripted by Patrick Hamilton from his own 1939 radio play – is a fast-paced featurette on the perils of driving under the influence. This B-movie – scripted from Hamilton’s 1939 radio play.

To complement the Hangover Square exhibition we are screening two of Patrick Hamilton's films. Though many of Patrick Hamilton’s intensely filmic novels received the Hollywood treatment during the 1940s, none quite captured what critic David Thomson calls Hamilton's ‘baleful atmosphere, the mix of lowly realism and metaphysical dread’. To complement the exhibition of an imagined Hangover Square film set at the University of Brighton Gallery, Cinecity presents two films steeped in the ‘Hamilton-esque’.
