Youth Curated Weekend: What Happens When Young People Take the Reins?

Music, Visual arts

To round off this year’s programme, Brighton Festival presents a Youth Curated Weekend in Brighton Dome Studio Theatre: two days of events shaped and designed by young people from across the city. Read on to find out what’s in store…

Sounds Like Us

On Sun 24 May, Sussex Music Hub lead organisation Create Music will present Sounds Like Us: showcasing up-and-coming artistic and musical talent from across the region. From 10am-12pm, a free visual art exhibition in the Studio Theatre will feature photography, painting and multimedia work from young artists, covering themes including identity, community, memory and nature. At 7pm, emerging performers aged 14-19 will take to the Studio Theatre stage for an evening of music, poetry and performance. Inspired by music of the 1960s, the young musicians will reimagine the sounds of yesterday with their own creative, contemporary takes. Both events have been shaped and designed by a youth panel alongside young creative professionals, giving a voice to young people from across Brighton & Hove and beyond.

We, Generate

The second day of the Youth Curated Weekend is presented by Brighton-based arts charity Lighthouse’s Future Creative Leaders: a collective of young creatives, thinkers and community builders. They will lead We, Generate: a youth-led takeover of Brighton Dome’s Studio Theatre on Mon 25 May. At 2pm, researcher and cultural strategist Dr Fez Sibanda leads a discussion on inheritance and legacy, imagination and hope, joined by activist and campaigner Mikaela Loach; environmental justice technologist and writer Joycelyn Longdon; and local storyteller and community leader, Naiya, together with young voices from Brighton's grassroots creative communities. At 7pm, Steam Down — a genre-defying jazz- and Afrobeat-influenced collective — headline an evening of improvised, intergenerational music-making alongside local artists and DJs. The Gallery Bar at Brighton Dome will also transform into a gallery of young people's artwork, created across the Festival at workshops with mental health charity Art in Mind, showcasing the best of young talent from across the city.

Create Music events are supported by Mayo Wynne Baxter.
