Celebrating Community and Creativity: Looking Back at ‘Our Place’ 2024

Outdoor, Family, Announcements, Outdoor, Family

Our Place is Brighton Festival’s partnership with surrounding communities. This summer, three Artists In Residence worked with local communities on some amazing creative projects that brought residents together and showcased their work. We take a look...

East Brighton

Photography: Claire Leach

Award-winning artist Victoria Melody took residents from Whitehawk, East Brighton back to the 17th century with Re-enactment: a day-long celebration inspired by The Diggers, a group who campaigned for community land ownership during the English Civil War. There were performances, activities, historical re-enactments and sharing food based on 400-year-old recipes, and residents planted seedlings in their new community garden.

Hangleton and Knoll

The launch event, 18 May

Artist and educator Clare Plumley led the design and creation of an inclusive portable sensory play unit with the Hangleton and Knoll community. Made for local children, particularly those with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the cabinet of curiosities was located in the community centre and focused on touch, scent and sound.

Building a giant marble run

Recycled materials and junk were transformed as Kate Milner-Gulland (Out of the Box Creative Arts) ran creative workshops with residents to build a giant cardboard amusement arcade and interactive gallery of artworks, including a giant marble run and an ‘electrojunk’ collage. People of all ages took part, and the community was invited to get together and enjoy the arcade as part of an open weekend at the 67 Centre in Moulsecoomb.
