The Epic of Gilgamesh was the first story ever written down. Not surprisingly, over millennia it has become a key cultural reference point and the subject of wide analysis and interpretation. Irving Finkel, curator of cuneiform inscriptions on ancient Mesopotamian clay tablets at the British Museum, charts the story of this vastly influential work and looks at its place in the world’s cultural history.
