Two recitals in counterpoint with Alice Oswald and actors from the Central School of Speech & Drama

Grief is black it is made of earth…

Memorial, Alice Oswald’s retelling of Homer’s Iliad strikes at the heart of what it means to lose a generation of young men to war. In this event, presented to complement the performance of Tippet’s King Priam (See Classical Music), the poet’s recital is placed in counterpoint to a chorus with actors from the Central School of Speech & Drama. The result is two simultaneous explorations of the poet’s work given voice.

Alice Oswald is an award-winning English poet. Dart – a multi-voiced tribute to the Devon river – won the TS Eliot Prize in 2002. In 2009 she was awarded the Hawthornden Prize for Sleepwalk on the Severn, a poem for several voices set at night on the Severn Estuary. Memorial was shortlisted for the TS Eliot Prize 2011.
