Sir Basil Spence and the University of Sussex

The year 1962 was a key one for Scottish architect Sir Basil Spence. His rebuilt Coventry Cathedral was completed and reconsecrated, and his pioneering architectural concept for the University of Sussex was realised.

This exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Sussex campus, exploring the phases of its development, public and press reaction, the early use of the buildings, and the landscaping of the environs. It highlights how Spence’s modernist vision reflected a new direction for higher education, and did so with an extraordinary combination of innovative design and respect for local, traditional building materials.

Jeremy Deller has been working on a project excavating  the University of Sussex's memory, using photographs documenting student life during the previous fifty years. The result of Deller's investigation is e incorporated as an installation in the University of Sussex Library Gallery.
Mike Nelson, the United Kingdom representative at the Venice Bienale last year, has been collaborating with The Archive of Modern Conflict in London and he will be contributing an installation of objects and artefacts drawn from there to the University of Sussex Library Gallery.
