Live_Transmission - Scanner and Heritage Orchestra rework Joy Division

In this exclusive Brighton Festival commission, Britain’s hippest young classical ensemble joins forces with celebrated sound artist Scanner and video artist Matt Watkins for an immersive multisensory event inspired by one of the UK’s most influential bands, Joy Division.

Using the latest sound design and other creative technologies (the players perform inside a giant gauze cube, around which the audience moves), this unique sonic and visual spectacle turns the tables on the conventional concert experience, reflecting Joy Division’s experimental, literary and artistic expression. Rather than classical interpretations or cover versions, Scanner and Heritage Orchestra pay homage to the music and signature spirit that defined Joy Division as one of the world’s most progressive ‘art’ bands.

Over the last decade Heritage Orchestra has become the ‘go to’ ensemble for innovative and exciting musical collaborations. They have worked with improv renegades The Bays (Brighton Dome 08), Massive Attack (on a live recreation of the Blade Runner soundtrack), electro production outfit UNKLE and British rappers Dizzy Rascal and The Streets. Scanner (a.k.a. Robin Rimbaud) is a conceptual artist, writer and musician. Exploring the terrain between sound, space, image and form, he has worked with the likes of Merce Cunningham, Steve McQueen and Wayne McGregor.
