Brought up in the Outer Hebrides, Scottish folk singer and multi-instrumentalist Julia Fowlis has been a proud standardbearer for Gaelic culture over the course of a solo career that has spanned four acclaimed studio albums and has seen her win a clutch of awards, including Folk Singer of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Her most recent album, Gach Sgeul (Every Story), is a mature offering of carefully selected Gaelic songs with lush, sensitive arrangements by musicians from Scotland, Ireland and further afield. From rapid-fire ‘mouth music’ to ballads and lullabies, Fowlis is an artist who has proven beyond doubt that traditional Gaelic music can make inroads into the mainstream without compromise.
