Philharmonia Orchestra

Thu 11 Feb 2016

As part of Dr Blighty week, we remember Brighton's Indian military hospitals with two special concerts at Brighton Dome marrying classical music traditions from East and West.

David Murphy conductor
Kala Ramnath Indian violin
Simon Blendis guest concertmaster and soloist, The Lark Ascending
Art Malik narrator

Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending
Butterworth The Banks of Green Willow
Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
Kala Ramnath The Seasons of India

Music, words and imagery combine in this special concert. The Philharmonia Orchestra perform some of the best-loved English works of the period, including Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending (the nation’s favourite piece of classical music as voted by Classic FM listeners), alongside violin virtuoso Kala Ramnath's own traditional music scored for violin, orchestra and Indian folk instruments.

Both Vaughan Williams and Butterworth volunteered for military service – Vaughan Williams served in the Royal Army Medical Corps and sadly his close friend Butterworth was killed in the battle of the Somme. Alongside their music will be readings from letters and diaries written by the Indian servicemen recuperating in Brighton, narrated by Art Malik - making for a truly poignant and evocative evening.
