The Young Americans (USA)

Tue 4 Feb 2020

On the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailing to the incorrectly named New World, today’s generation of Indigenous American artists takes centre stage in this powerful new exhibition. Native artists from diverse tribal nations examine what it means to grow up in the contemporary United States with a display of fine art photography, printmaking and painting. Their explosive visual mix of techniques, experimentation and individual perspectives shatter clichéd perceptions of Indigenous art and life. Many of these artists are alumni of the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a well-spring of creative innovation since the 1960s. Building on the legacy of groundbreaking Indigenous artists who came before them, these artists are both unapologetically forward-looking and self-reflecting. Educated, articulate and fearless, they epitomise the exciting and fast-changing scene of American Indian art. These are The Young Americans of today – Indigenous, dynamic and indomitable.
