Diya-making sessions

We bring the Dr Blighty week to a close with Dr Blighty: Commemorations (Sun 29 May, 4pm), laying a wreath at the Indian Gate; unveiling a Blue Plaque honouring Subedar Mir Dast (awarded the Victoria Cross at the Royal Pavilion by King George V); and arranging thousands of diya lamps to commemorate the soldiers’ stay in the city.

Come along to one of the drop in diya making sessions at Brighton Dome Café-bar throughout the Festival and make your very own decorated clay pot for the final installation. 

Nutkhut has taken the diyas or clay pot lamp as one of the symbols of its interpretation of the Dr Blighty story - connecting the mud of the trenches, and the conditions in which the soldiers were faced, and used the clay pots as a mechanism of interpretation to connect with this aspect of the Great War. Housing a small flame these lamps were used as a form of commemoration, celebration and to provide light in times of darkness for the writing of letters.
