Contemporary Africa with Sharp Dress and Sounds – Come to Dance!
After its huge success in 2014, our night of contemporary African rhythms returns. Our headliner is Spoek Mathambo, one of South Africa’s most forward-thinking and imaginative artists. As part of Fantasma, he explored a style described as Guzu, fusing traditional South African styles with western forms; where township house rubs shoulders with hip hop, and maskandi rhythms melt into shangaan electro.
Joining him on the bill is Belgian-based Congolese rapper Baloji, an artist who stands at the crossroads of traditional African and electronic music and who makes a welcome return to Brighton Festival.
They are joined by DJ collective Ye Ye Fever, which has been bringing afrobeat, soukous and everything in between to dance floors for five years.
