The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk

Tue 13 Feb 2018

Meet Marc Chagall and his wife Bella: the flying lovers of Vitebsk! Partners in life and in art, Marc and Bella are immortalised as the picture of romance. But whilst on canvas they flew, in life they walked through some of the most devastating times in history.

Kneehigh’s The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk traces the lives of the 20th century’s most influential Jewish artist and his wife as they navigate the Pogroms, the Russian Revolution, and each other.

Kneehigh is one of the UK’s most beloved theatre companies, and their irresistible Tristan & Yseult was a huge hit of Brighton Festival 2017. Now the company returns with another extraordinary love story. Emma Rice’s production is drawn in a theatrical language as fluid as Chagall’s paintings, together with wonderful live music and dance inspired by Russian-Jewish tradition.

Actors Marc Antolin and Audrey Brisson give us an insight into The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk in our Festival Hot Seat interview.
