Mehfil – e – Rose Hill: Into the Moonlight
Experience a true ‘Mehfil’ - a purposefully small intimate setting for South Asian classical music - where a musician and their audience aim to reach the ‘rasa’ – a state of engagement when they become ‘one’ in emotion and intent. Often played to the appropriate time of the day and night, here at the Mehfil – e – Rose Hill, they will play alongside genre defying new creations.
CAFÉKATHAK: Amina Khayyam (Amina Khayyam Dance Co) Kathak, Debasish Mukherjee Tabla and Iain McHugh Cello/Bass
NAZRUL SONG: Sohini Alam Vocalist, Debasish Mukherjee Tabla, Oliver Weeks Guitar, Himanish Goswani Tabla
Get immersed as we go into the late evening with two distinct performances of artful South Asian sounds, led by two British women of Bangladeshi origin.
CaféKathak is an innovative immersive experience – where Amina Khayyam brings alive Kathak inspired ‘bols’ (the sounds to describe a dancer’s footwork patterns) improvising with the brilliant Debasish on tabla, alongside Iain’s cello.
Sohini Alam will enthral with a performance of Nazrul songs – based on ideas of revolution, love and freedom. Sohini currently leads her own musical ensembles such as Khiyo and Lokki Terra, and perform regularly with world renowned artists such as Akram Khan, and with the ground-breaking Kathak theatre Amina Khayyam Dance Company. A huge coup for Brighton Festival and The Rose Hill to host these two artists.
The Mehfil Space is an innovative initiative to promote and develop purposefully intimate gatherings for South Asian Classical Music.
