Mehfils A Studio Theatre Takeover: Shift Octatonic
Join us for a specially curated Mehfil gathering where performers and audience come together to experience the 'rasa' (emotion) of South Asian classical arts
In this first performance forming Mehfils A Studio Theatre Takeover, the Artistic Director of zerOclassikal Jonathan Mayer leads an experimental approach to the use the octatonic scale in a raag setting, colliding and connecting to create a new piece.
Shift Octatonic shows the migration of the scale that was made popular in the 20th century by European composers, moving from Persia to the West and now to South Asia, in a revolutionary set of transpositions with electronic raag and taal.
Bring or find a rug or cushion in this relaxed setting where you are encouraged to find your own place around the stage.
Jonathan Mayer (sitar), William Rees Hoffman (sarod), Robin Christian Bansuri (flute), Chandra Chakraborty (vocals), Debashish Mukerjee (tabla) and Carmilo Tirado (electronics)
