Come and join the fun at our Storytime for Preschoolers at The Riwaq! Listen to tales from around the world as you feed their imagination. Our specially chosen books will be read and brought to life by performers taking part across Brighton Festival. Let the magical world of books bring joy to you and your little ones.

Check your shelves and bring along a book to read in the beautiful, peaceful surrounds of the Riwaq.

Printing Workshop

East Side Print

Wed 18 May, 2pm–6pm | FREE

Come and be a part of creating a colourful block printed banner based on the theme of hopes and dreams at this free drop-in workshop facilitated by East Side Print. Using vibrant colours, choose from our collection of hand made blocks, to ink up and print. Suitable for all ages and abilities, have a go as you are walking by, stay for 5 minutes or as long as you like. The finished banners will hang on the Riwaq site during the festival as a creative celebration of being together.

Brazilian Dance with Dr. Rosaria M. Gracia

Wed 18 & 25 May (CANCELLED due to weather), 6pm–7pm | FREE

Join us and enjoy the opportunity to test different Brazilian rhythms and dances. These sessions are packed with Afoxe, Samba reggae, Coco, Danza dos Arcos, Cavalo Marinho and of course Maracatu. We will be working with a little of technique, develop basic choreographies in Maracatu, Samba reggae and Afoxe, and generally having a good dance!  Do not miss it!

AmaSu: Yoga and Movement Medicine

AmaSu will be offering a Yoga and Movement Medicine session with music and live singing bowls. A restful and moving experience in which to breathe with ease.

Everywhere we look the world seems to be filled with despair, violence, exhaustion and overwhelm. Is this true? Let us plug into this year’s Brighton Festival theme: 'Hope & Rebuilding’.

In hard times what words and song do you have in your heart to comfort and restore? What sayings and songs do you remember that soothed you and loved ones? What letter would you write? What song would you sing for Hope? For your ancestors, your home, community, yourself, the world... Come into the tent and dive in with hopeful words and songs. Let us remember that hope is a choice and we can rebuild – however small adding to the big vision for a kinder world.

Josh’s music has no set genre. As a writer, used to writing for different types of artists, Josh makes whatever he feels is right for the instrumental. From Hip-Hop, Pop, Reggae and RnB. His content is dependent on the current lifestyle and experiences he goes through. His diverse style and soulful vocals, mixed with his hard-hitting rap is definitely not to be missed.

Are you a parent or carer trying to entertain a small human whilst nurturing a moral and ethical code?! Introducing: C is for Clap Back!  The little corner of Clap Back Club reserved for all the mini feminists out there and the amazing people raising them.

Join us at The Riwaq to share some of our favourite children’s stories, exploring themes of courage, problem solving, respect and individuality - all brought to life to delight children and their grownups alike. 

Following each story time, we will have a related craft workshop giving our mini feminists something to make and do, so that you can bring the stories to life at home too. 

Kite making with Sanjar

Come along to a feast of kite making and kite flying made of simplest of tools and material. The art of kite flying is one whose roots extend back to the ancient times. Kite running is a past time in many cultures. We want to offer the experience of what is behind kite flying, the making of a simple flight craft.  Kite flying is a craft part science and part art.

Best Foot Music: Eugenia & Zivorad

Eugenia is internationally known for her work with Bulgarian a cappella group Perunika Trio, vocal fusion outfit YANTRA, exploring the intersecting points of Bulgarian, Indian and Renaissance English sacred and secular tradition, and her own five-piece band of virtuosos Eugenia Georgieva & Band.

Zivorad Nicolic studied accordion in Kragujevac, Serbia before coming to London and graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 2009. As well as being a Solo artist Zivorad is a member of Fugata Quintet, Accordduo, Paprika and She'koyokh Klezmer and Balkan ensemble.

Best Foot Music: Balamuc

Balamuc are a unique collective of experienced musicians, with 7 members from countries in Europe, the Middle East and the Pacific. Their music originates from Eastern Europe but stretches way beyond the usual confines of their genre. Although renowned for their fierce violin and heartfelt melodies, Balamuc are best known as their life affirming, uplifting party spirit and boundless energy.
